Maysville Commission on Human Rights Launches Homeless Awareness Day Initiative
MAYSVILLE, Ky. (Mason County Post) — The Maysville Commission on Human Rights, in partnership with the Buffalo Trace Homeless Coalition, is planning the launch of a new community initiative aimed at shining a light on the growing number of individuals experiencing homelessness in the Buffalo Trace region and fostering greater community support and action.
The initiative comes at a time when local service providers report increased demand for housing assistance, outreach, and supportive services across Mason, Bracken, Fleming, Lewis, and Robertson counties. Organizations like Welcome House, a key partner in the region, have expanded street outreach, rapid re-housing efforts, and emergency shelter capacity in recent years to meet these needs.
“This Initiative represents a vital step forward in addressing homelessness not just as a housing issue, but as a fundamental human rights concern,” Brey Foster a member on the Maysville Commission on Human Rights said in response to a request for comment by Mason County Post. “We’ve seen a noticeable rise in the number of folks who are considered unhoused, and it’s essential that our community comes together to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and build pathways to stable housing and support services.”

The Buffalo Trace Homeless Coalition has been actively involved in efforts such as emergency shelter development, food distribution grants, and partnerships for permanent supportive housing projects like Sutton’s Landing, which opened to provide dozens of units with on-site services.
The proposal was discussed on June 18 at a Human Rights Commission meeting between Commissioner Jason Giles, Commissioner Foster, and Commission Chairwoman Carmen Gomez. Since then, the initiative has gained momentum with community partners aiming for an October 10, Homeless Awareness Day event hosted at the Maysville Pavilion Downtown for World Homeless Day.
This is one of two initiatives the Maysville Commission on Human Rights is planning in the coming months.
The event’s schedule is yet to be finalized, if you wish to stay updated follow the Commissions Official Facebook Page.
